PRE ADVANCED PLACEMENT/READING LANGUAGE ARTS II
Pre Advanced Placement (PreAP) English II is a rigorous college preparation sophomore English course. The purpose of a PreAP course is to prepare students for college work. It also prepares students for the AP exams, given their junior and senior years, which afford them the opportunity to receive college credits while still in high school. Other characteristics of PreAP courses include content immersion, a fast pace, and assessment of performance at the analysis, synthesis, and argumentative levels. Typically, successful PreAP students are mature in nature (to read about and discuss controversial topics in literature and current events), task oriented, proficient readers, able to prioritize their time, and have committed parental support.
It is important PreAP English students understand the following:
Class work/Homework/Grading:
1. Blue pen, black pen, or pencil ONLY
2. Loose leaf notebook paper – no fringes
3. Must be legible or will not be graded (will be asked to re-do)
4. Typed and/or electronically submitted as assigned
5. Missing/Late assignments are indicated in gradebook with a 50%. A grade change will be implemented when/if assignments are turned in (-10-point late penalty – see note) for grading.
6. Homework will average one hour per night (when assigned) and may also be assigned on weekends and during holiday breaks and vacation.
Note: Late homework will receive a 10-point penalty. Quizzes and exams will receive a 0 if not made up.
Essays: The PreAP course is reading and writing intensive. PreAP students will write a minimum of one major paper each nine weeks. Students should expect to write an essay on every piece of literature or unit studied. Major papers will be 500-750 words in length; minor papers will be 300-500 words in length (MLA format). At the sophomore level, these papers are written in the narrative, informative, persuasive, and argumentative voices.
Materials:
1. Laptop (full charged – issued by school)
2. Textbook (issued by school)
3. Blue pen, black pen, or pencil
4. Loose leaf notebook paper
5. Three-ring binder (to keep organized)
6. Composition Notebook (ISN – issued by school)
Note: ALL materials must be brought to class daily.
Attendance: ATTENDANCE IS ESSENTIAL FOR SUCCESS IN THIS COURSE. All students should attend class regularly, participate in learning activities, and keep up-to-date notes and class information. As a PreAP class, we will be moving at a rapid pace, and our class discussions will center on concepts and ideas students will need later for writing assignments and exams. I understand there will be times your child cannot attend class due to illness, family situations, extra-curricular activities, etc…. If your child is absent for any reason, s/he must obtain assignments and notes from another student or the teacher. If an assignment is not understood, it is your child’s responsibility to seek help from the teacher outside of class time either before school and/or after school. All work assigned prior to an absence is still due at the predetermined deadline.
Dress Code:
The school district/campus dress code policy will be enforced.
Restroom Access and Hall Pass:
Restroom use ONLY allowed in emergency situations. We must maximize instructional learning time.
Note: Student MUST carry hall pass, always, when out of the classroom during instructional time.
Exiting Policy: A teacher may recommend a student be rescheduled into an on level English course if the student is encountering great difficulty with the workload or with higher level thinking required in the course. This change should take place at the semester after a joint conference with the counselor, the parent, the student, the teacher, and administration.
Honor Code: This class will be conducted under the Honor Code. All students will be expected to do their own work, whether with a partner, as part of a small group, or individually. Occasionally, students will be given projects or exams that must be completed outside of class. Whatever the case may be, students are expected to produce assignments, to the best of their abilities, utilizing all materials provided and approved by the teacher.
It is important PreAP English students understand the following:
- All assigned reading and writing will be done both inside and outside of class time.
- PreAP students will usually be reading and writing to analyze two selections concurrently.
